The "Perchtenlauf" is still a nice custom and is practised in part of South Germany, Austria and Switzerland, so mainly in the Alps. The origin is a little bit obscure. It starts by the first "Rauhnacht" on Dec. 24th and ends up on Jan. 6th. The "Rauhnacht" includes 12 nights. Nowadays, young people which wear the masks, try to scare and beat the spectators, especially young girls...mmhhh...a little bit mean...^_^... but most of them know each other.
